Questions we get asked
Can't find your question? Email hello@teamfatt.org.
I can only swim breaststroke. Is that a problem?
No. Breaststroke is allowed in every triathlon we know of, and many beginners swim the whole leg that way. We'll help you with front crawl if you'd like to learn it, but you don't have to.
Am I too old or too unfit?
If your doctor is happy for you to exercise, you're not too old. Our team is for people 45 and up, and we start from wherever you are. Plenty of people finish their first sprint triathlon in their 60s and 70s.
Do I need an expensive bike?
No. Any bike in safe working order and a helmet are enough for training and for most beginner races. Upgrade later if you catch the bug.
What if I'm the slowest?
Someone is always last, and at F.A.T.T. they get the loudest cheer. Sessions are planned so nobody trains alone at the back.
Do I need a wetsuit?
Only if your race is in open water and the water is cold. Many races let you rent one. We'll talk about it once we've picked a race.
How much time does training take?
Around [3–4] hours a week, spread over a few sessions. More is not better when you're starting out.
How much does it cost?
Trying a session is free. Membership is [fee]. On top of that you'll pay your own race entry, which for a sprint triathlon is usually somewhere around [typical local price].
Can my partner or friend join too?
Yes, please bring them. Training with someone you know makes it easier to keep going.
